Tri-City Blue Opens 2001 League Season with Dramatic Win over Fridley
Monday, 6/11/01
Starter, Steve Lawler, in his first 2001 Blue pitching outing,
threw a no-hitter through the sixth inning. With the score 2-0
going into the bottom of the 7th, Lawler struck out the first
batter. While the second batter also struck out, he reached first
on an error by the catcher. Fridley's next batter followed with a
two-run homer to tie the game. The next two Fridley batters were
walked by Lawler, and Cease came in in relief of Lawler. After
walking the first batter he faced to load the bases, Cease
successfully popped up the next batter to the catcher, ending the
inning. Lawler proceeded to lead off the 10th inning with a
single to right center, and then advanced to second on a passed
ball. After Bloom expertly sacrificed Lawler to 3rd base, Jenson
executed a successful squeeze play, allowing Lawler to score the
ultimate game winning run. In the bottom of the 10th, Cease got
the first two batters out, and after walking the next two,
McDonald came in for the save opportunity, striking out the only
batter he faced. High drama, indeed!!!!!
