Banquet kicks off '06 state tourney | 2006

The 2006
Minnesota American Legion Tournament got underway at
Excelsior/Minnetonka on Wednesday with the program's
annual banquet held at the Minneapolis Marriott
Southwest.

The American
Legion presented three awards at the banquet.

Polls are only guesswork,
but they can provide an indication of the teams to beat.
This year's final Minnesota American Legion Baseball
Coaches & Media Poll, which uses a panel of voters
across the State of Minnesota, had the following results
(accumulated points and first place votes is shown in
parentheses.) |
Games will be played on four fields | ||
Sixteen teams from across
the state will begin playing baseball today on four
fields in the southwest Metro area. The main field will be Big Willow in Minnetonka, with Bennett Field, also in Minnetonka, as Field 2. Other games will be played at Chaska Athletic Park and at the Jordan Mini-Met. The tournament will be double-elimination with the final two teams advancing to a national regional tournament. |
Sixteen games will be played
today, and four teams will be eliminated. The remaining
teams will continue through the bracketat Big Willow and
Bennett on Friday, and at Big Willow on Saturday and
Sunday. The championship game will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. One winner of the tourney will advance to Aberdeen, S.D., and the other will advance to Evansville, Ind. Both regionals will be played August 10-14. The World Series will be played in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, from Aug. 19-23. |
Minnesota has had four World Series
Winners: Richfield in 1943, Edina in 1983, New Brighton
Tri-City Red in 1999, and Rochester A's in 2003. In 2002,
Excelsior, the host of this year'stournament, was the
national runner-up. A Division II tournament, for the smaller schools in the state, will be held this weekend at Willmar. The Division I tourney is the largest Legion state tournament in the nation. Minnesota is second only to Pennsylvania in number of tearms, with 340. Over 6,000 young men play American Legion baseball in the state. |
